New Delhi, August 30: The Congress on Friday launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his ongoing visit to Japan and upcoming trip to China, accusing him of abandoning violence-hit Manipur.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, alleged that while the Prime Minister continued frequent foreign travels, he had failed to visit Manipur or engage with political leaders, civil society groups, and the public. He claimed Modi had “washed his hands off Manipur,” leaving the people to suffer without his intervention.
Ramesh also raised concerns over India’s diplomatic approach toward China, accusing the government of “normalizing” relations largely on Beijing’s terms. He recalled Modi’s June 2020 statement denying Chinese incursions along the border, which he said weakened India’s negotiating position and contributed to the current situation.
Meanwhile, Modi, who received a warm reception from the Indian diaspora in Tokyo earlier today, is on his first standalone visit to Japan in nearly seven years to boost bilateral cooperation. Following his Japan visit, the Prime Minister will travel to Tianjin, China, from August 31 to September 1 to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, where he is expected to hold bilateral meetings with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
