Imphal, August 30: The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has demanded that the state’s President Rule administration issue an immediate notification to conduct overdue elections to local self-government bodies, including Panchayats, the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC), Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), and Autonomous District Councils (ADCs).
Addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan, MPCC senior spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei highlighted that the terms of these bodies have long expired, depriving people of grassroots governance. Citing the recent Manipur High Court order directing the government to hold Gram Panchayat elections within six months, he urged authorities to comply without delay.
Bupenda recalled that while the High Court had earlier directed the state to conduct IMC and ULB elections by November 2022, no notification has been issued to date. He further noted that ADC elections have been pending since November 2020. Alleging that the prolonged delay has hindered development, the Congress leader pressed the President Rule administration to prioritise timely elections across all local bodies.
