Senapati, August 31: The Laii (Vafiimai) Village Authority Council has issued an clarification regarding the unfortunate incident involving Hornbill TV reporter Dip Saikia, who was injured during the ongoing Zinnia Festival held at Laii Village, Senapati District.
In a statement dated August 30, the Village Authority expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as “deeply concerning” and emphasizing that it does not reflect the peace-loving and hospitable nature of the Laii community.
The Village Authority identified the perpetrator as Raiveinii Ramai, clarifying that he is not a resident of Laii Village, but hails from Phuba Khuman and currently resides at Council, Senapati. According to the statement, Mr. Ramai was a visiting tourist at the festival and was not affiliated with Laii Village in any official capacity.
Importantly, the Village Authority Council noted that possession of air-guns and hunting within Laii Village is strictly prohibited under local regulations. The incident reportedly occurred approximately 3 kilometers south of the main festival venue, though still within the jurisdiction of Laii Village.
As per the testimony given before village authorities, Mr. Ramai admitted to firing an air-gun with the intention of shooting a bird, and claimed he was unaware of the presence of the victim in the line of fire at the time.
While reaffirming their non-involvement in the incident, the Laii Village Authority strongly condemned certain media reports which they say have attempted to tarnish the image of the village by reporting “without ascertaining the ground reality.” They labeled such portrayals as “misleading, unfair, and damaging” to the village’s reputation.
“We strongly object to any attempt to portray Laii Village in a negative light without verification of facts. Such reporting is misleading, unfair, and damaging to the reputation of a community that has always been peace-loving and hospitable,” the statement read.
The council has urged the media to avoid politicizing the matter and to report responsibly, based on verified facts.
The Laii Village Authority expressed solidarity with the victim, extending sincere concern for his recovery and promising full cooperation to ensure that justice is served. They also apologized to all visitors for the distress caused and reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for everyone attending the Zinnia Festival or visiting the community.
