Guwahati, September 5: Three institutions from Northeast India have secured places among the top 100 in the prestigious National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Education.
Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati ranked impressively at 11th position, while Gauhati University secured the 52nd spot, and National Institute of Technology (NIT) Silchar was placed 97th. All three premier institutions are based in Assam, highlighting the region’s growing prominence in higher education.
This year’s NIRF assessment covered 17 categories, including new ones such as Open Universities, Skill Universities, State Public Universities, and an addition focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The rankings are based on parameters such as teaching quality, research, outreach, and perception.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the significance of NIRF, describing it as a “trusted pillar” in India’s mission to become a global knowledge superpower. He also noted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has provided a roadmap to enhance the accreditation and international competitiveness of Indian institutions.
Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the North Eastern Region, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, highlighted that with over 14,000 institutions participating, the NIRF has evolved into a credible platform that promotes quality, integrity, and innovation in higher education. “Marking a decade of India Rankings, this journey reflects the resilience and aspirations of our universities and colleges,” he said.
Indian Institute of Technology Madras maintained its dominance by retaining the 1st rank in the Overall Category for the seventh consecutive year (2019–2025) and the top spot in Engineering for the tenth consecutive year (2016–2025).
