Guwahati, September 5: Ace shooter and Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker on Wednesday inspired young aspirants to embrace sports as a serious career path, highlighting the values of discipline, dedication, and national pride that define the journey of a sportsperson.
Bhaker was in Guwahati to receive the prestigious Best Sportsperson (National) award, conferred on the occasion of the birth anniversary of legendary Assamese athlete Bhogeswar Baruah. The event was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Reflecting on her sporting journey, Bhaker described sports as a powerful platform for personal growth and national service. “Sports has been a beautiful journey and a great career option,” she said. “You may be away from your family and training hard, but winning for your country and seeing the national flag fly high is the best moment of your life.”
The double Olympic medallist spoke candidly about the challenges and rewards of an athletic career, noting the short professional span in most sports, but also the deep fulfilment it brings. “The respect a sportsperson receives is beyond words,” she said, adding that the sacrifices made by athletes and their families are repaid through moments of victory and recognition.
Encouraging children to consider sports beyond just a hobby, Bhaker stated, “You get to travel the world, experience highs and lows, and learn important lessons along the way. It’s a journey of hard work, sacrifice, and immense pride in representing your nation.”
