Shillong, Sept 6: In a dramatic development in the heart of Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong Police arrested 13 individuals, including one Meban Snaitang, who allegedly posed as a “mafia boss” for impersonating law enforcement personnel and possessing suspicious items, including air guns and walkie-talkies.
The arrests were made on Friday afternoon near the Secretariat when police noticed three suspicious vehicles — an Audi, a Bolero, and a Toyota Innova — parked opposite the building. According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem, one of the vehicles had no number plate, and all three had tinted windows, prompting officers to inspect further.
Upon investigation, officers discovered 13 individuals dressed in black uniforms, appearing to impersonate a tactical law enforcement team. The Special Operations Team (SOT) was immediately deployed to the scene. A search of the vehicles led to the seizure of:
- Five nitro air guns
- Two air pistols
- Six magazines
- Multiple walkie-talkies
- Black tactical-style uniforms
SP Syiem confirmed that all individuals were detained and taken to Sadar Police Station for questioning and formalities. “We will be taking up a case under the relevant sections for impersonation of law enforcement officers and under the Arms Act,” he stated, adding that further searches are ongoing to uncover any additional incriminating materials.
The bizarre incident has left Shillong residents stunned, especially due to its proximity to the Secretariat and the audacity of the suspects’ impersonation. The motives behind their actions remain unclear, but police are investigating whether the group was involved in intimidation or fraudulent activities.
Further interrogation and background checks are underway to determine the extent of the impersonation and whether the suspects were part of a larger coordinated effort.
The Meghalaya Police have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, especially involving individuals attempting to pose as officials or security personnel.
