New Delhi, Sept 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday warmly responded to former US President Donald Trump’s recent remarks describing India-US relations as a “very special relationship,” stating that he “deeply appreciates and fully reciprocates” the sentiment.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi reaffirmed the strength of bilateral ties, writing, “India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”
The exchange comes after President Trump, speaking at a White House event on Friday (local time), described the India-US relationship as “very special,” affirming his personal rapport with PM Modi. “I’ll always be friends with (PM) Modi. He’s a great Prime Minister… there is nothing to worry about,” Trump stated when asked if he was ready to reset relations with India.
However, Trump also expressed criticism over PM Modi’s recent actions, without specifying the issue. “I just don’t like what he is doing at this particular moment,” he added, suggesting temporary disagreements but reaffirming long-term friendship and diplomatic ties.
Trump also addressed concerns over India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia amid geopolitical tensions, saying, “I’ve been very disappointed that India would be buying so much oil from Russia. I let them know that.” He referenced his administration’s earlier response, which included imposing a 50% tariff on Indian goods.
Despite this, Trump emphasized his positive personal relationship with PM Modi, recalling their recent meeting in the White House Rose Garden just a few months ago.
Reacting to the developments, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also highlighted the enduring strength of the bilateral relationship. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the India-US partnership as “comprehensive, global, and strategic,” and emphasized that it is anchored in “shared democratic values, mutual respect, and robust people-to-people ties.”
He added that the relationship has “weathered several transitions and challenges,” and that both countries remain committed to their substantive agenda, aiming to move forward together based on mutual interests.
The diplomatic exchange signals continued cooperation and goodwill between the two nations, despite occasional policy disagreements — a characteristic of mature international partnerships.
