Guwahati, September 10: Congress leader and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi has strongly refuted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s allegations linking him and his wife to Pakistan’s intelligence network, terming them “wild and fabricated.”
Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said the CM was insulting the intelligence of the people of Assam by peddling baseless charges. “The chief minister thinks the people of Assam are foolish enough to believe such fabricated stories. This is an insult to their intelligence and wisdom,” he said.
Accusing Sarma of attempting to divert public attention from his government’s failures, Gogoi alleged that the BJP regime was mired in corruption and misuse of office. “The people of Assam know he has built this story only to hide corruption, misuse of office, and the illegal wealth his family has accumulated,” Gogoi added.
The Congress MP asserted that public sentiment was shifting in his party’s favour ahead of the assembly polls. “No matter what Sarma says, there will be a strong wind of change. The people want a government that works for education, health, jobs, and local industries—not for personal gain,” he remarked.
He further claimed that several BJP leaders were deserting the ruling party to join Congress. “They don’t want to work in a corrupt party. Today, a huge number of people have joined us,” Gogoi said.
Earlier, Sarma had vowed to “expose” Gogoi on September 10, alleging that his wife, Elizabeth Colburn, a British citizen, visited Islamabad at least 18 times between 2010 and 2015 and had ties with Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who is allegedly linked to Pakistan’s spy agency.
