Imphal, September 12: Tensions ran high in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Thursday evening after clashes broke out between police and unidentified miscreants at Peasonmun Village, barely two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a group of miscreants attempted to dismantle and destroy decorations put up in preparation for the Prime Minister’s programme. Police personnel rushed to the spot to intervene, triggering a confrontation that soon spiralled into violent clashes.
Visuals from the scene showed damage to properties in the area, though the extent of the losses remains unclear. Eyewitnesses reported intense scuffles, but there is no official word yet on injuries. Senior police officials in Churachandpur refrained from issuing detailed comments, stating it was “too early” to assess the situation.
Security forces have been deployed in the village to prevent further escalation, with additional reinforcements expected as Modi’s visit nears. The Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in Manipur on September 13, during which he will address rallies at Imphal’s Kangla Fort and in Churachandpur, while also laying foundation stones for projects worth an estimated ₹8,500 crore.
