Guwahati, September 12: In a continuing crackdown on quackery, Cachar police have arrested two more individuals posing as MBBS-qualified doctors, taking the total number of fake practitioners caught in the district to eight since August.
The accused have been identified as 35-year-old Nihar H. Mazarbhuiya and Radheshyam Rabidas. Police picked up Mazarbhuiya from Borkhola and Rabidas from Jirighat Bazar near the Manipur border in separate operations.
According to Cachar Superintendent of Police Numal Mahatta, both men were practising medicine without any formal qualifications and were in possession of forged MBBS certificates. “They admitted to acquiring the documents through a racket, and we are investigating further,” Mahatta said.
Investigations revealed that Mazarbhuiya falsely claimed to be a senior physician with a postgraduate MD and even ran two pharmacies—Dilshan Drugs and Sania Drugs—where he treated unsuspecting patients. Rabidas, meanwhile, had been practising in Jirighat Bagaan, misleading villagers by posing as a qualified doctor.
Police said the duo has been booked under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of cheating, forgery, and endangering human life.
Earlier on September 9, Cachar police had arrested two more fake doctors, one of whom posed as a senior gastroenterologist with an MBBS degree from Kazakhstan. Authorities confirmed that at least eight quacks have been arrested in Cachar district over the past month.
