Guwahati, September 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said strict legal action will be taken against Assam Civil Service (ACS) officer Nupur Borah, who has been arrested for accumulating assets vastly disproportionate to her known sources of income.
Borah, who was serving as Circle Officer in Goraimari, Kamrup district, was found to have amassed wealth nearly 400 times higher than her official income. Searches at her residences in Guwahati and Barpeta led to the recovery of ₹92.5 lakh in cash and ornaments worth nearly ₹1.5 crore, along with documents linking her to three flats in Guwahati.
“She had amassed wealth 400 times more than her known sources of income. Not just suspension or dismissal, we must ensure penal measures through the legal process,” CM Sarma said while addressing a public programme in Baksa district.
Officials revealed that Borah had been under watch for the past six months, particularly after she allegedly authorised an illegal land transfer deal while posted in Barpeta. Following that controversy, she was transferred.
According to Rosie Kalita, SSP of the CM’s Special Vigilance Cell, the arrest was made after a preliminary inquiry. “The cash recovered is the largest ever by our cell so far,” she confirmed. Several others linked to the case are currently under questioning.
Calling for public cooperation, Sarma urged citizens to report any bribery attempts by officials. “The investigation will continue with full transparency to ensure accountability,” he assured.
