Guwahati, September 18: A shocking case of alleged gang rape has surfaced in Guwahati after Assam Police arrested two students from Manipur for sexually assaulting a girl hailing from Tripura. All the accused and the survivor are students of the same private university in the city.
According to police, the incident took place on the night of September 13, when the survivor attended a party with five male students. Preliminary investigation suggests she was allegedly drugged during the gathering before being raped. The matter came to light after she filed a complaint at Pani Khaity outpost on September 16, following which a case was registered at Pragjyotispur Police Station.
DCP (East) Amitav Basumatary confirmed the arrests, stating that two of the accused have been taken into custody and produced before the Juvenile Justice Board as both are minors. The remaining three suspects are under the police scanner and will be arrested once their involvement is confirmed.
The university authorities have suspended all five accused from both academic and non-academic activities with effect from September 17, pending further disciplinary action and the outcome of the police probe.
Meanwhile, Tripura royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma strongly condemned the incident, confirming that he had personally spoken to the survivor and assured her of full support.
“A girl from Tripura was allegedly raped in Guwahati. I have spoken to the victim and offered all help to her. I appeal to everyone not to speculate or reveal her identity. We will ensure justice is given to the victim,” Debbarma posted on social media.
