Guwahati, September 22: The Assam Kaziranga University has expressed deep regret over an incident involving a Nagaland student whose remarks, made in frustration and circulated on social media, sparked widespread resentment both within and outside the campus.
According to a statement issued by the University Registrar, the incident occurred on September 20 when the student returned from Jorhat city and, unable to find transportation back to the hostel, expressed frustration before his peers. In that state, he allegedly made offensive remarks, including references to late singer Zubeen Garg, which quickly spread online.
The situation escalated after a group of individuals, including outsiders, entered the campus and attempted to create unrest at the Boys’ Hostel. Authorities, however, acted swiftly, with timely intervention by the Superintendent of Police, Additional SP, ADC, Circle Officer, and OIC, Pulibor, Jorhat, ensuring that the situation was brought under control.
The University confirmed that the student, who has since issued a public apology expressing deep remorse, has been suspended from all academic and hostel privileges with immediate effect, pending investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy, the University stated: “We strongly urge all students to refrain from making inappropriate remarks on social media or engaging in actions that may disrupt the peace and dignity of our academic environment.”
Meanwhile, many Nagaland students studying at Kaziranga University have expressed their desire to return home for a few weeks. The Government of Nagaland has stepped in to assist with transportation and safety arrangements.
Minister Imna Along assured that the situation at the University is currently under control but confirmed that necessary logistical and security support is being provided for the safe travel of students from Jorhat to Dimapur and Mokokchung.
