Guwahati, September 26: In a rare appeal to the legal fraternity, the All Assam Lawyers’ Association (AALA) has urged its members not to represent individuals accused in connection with the sudden and mysterious death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
Issuing a public statement on Friday, the AALA cited moral, ethical, and social responsibility as the basis for its call, stressing that the case is not just a legal matter but one tied deeply to the sentiments of millions across Assam.
Describing Zubeen Garg as the “heartbeat of Assamese identity” and a “global cultural asset,” the body said his untimely death in Singapore has plunged the state into grief, suspicion, and demands for justice.
The Association noted that multiple FIRs have already been registered across Assam against individuals allegedly linked to the incident, while the State Government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough probe. With concerns that the accused may soon seek anticipatory bail or legal protection, the AALA urged lawyers to act in solidarity with public sentiment.
“The individuals under public suspicion are widely perceived as morally compromised. In such a sensitive and emotionally charged situation, the legal profession must stand with the people,” the statement said.
While reaffirming its respect for the judiciary, the AALA insisted that lawyers must reflect the conscience of Assamese society and ensure that “justice is not only done but also seen to be done,” preserving both public trust and the dignity of Assamese culture.
The appeal was formally signed by senior members of the Association, including Sri Sailendra Das (President), Sri Dipak Kumar Das (General Secretary), Sri Manas Sarania (Working President), and Sri Bijan Kumar Mahajan (Vice President).
