Chennai, October 1: Nine migrant workers from Assam tragically lost their lives at the North Chennai Thermal Power Station extension project in Minjur, Thiruvallur district, on Tuesday when an under-construction structure collapsed during ongoing work by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).
The deceased, all engaged as labourers, hailed from Assam’s Karbi Anglong and Hojai districts. Four victims were from Karbi Anglong, while five were from Hojai. The names of the victims have been identified as Munna Kemprai, Sorbojit Thausen, Phaibit Fanglu, Bidayum Porbosa, Paban Sorong, Prayanto Sorong, Suman Kharikap, Dimaraj Thousen, and Dipak Raijung.
Authorities from Assam are coordinating with Tamil Nadu officials to ensure the prompt repatriation of the bodies. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it a tragedy and conveying condolences to the families of the deceased.
The Chief Minister directed Electricity Minister S. S. Sivasankar and TANGEDCO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan to rush to the site to oversee relief and rescue operations. He also announced an ex-gratia of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the victims.
