Kohima, October 18: The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has welcomed and accepted the merger proposal from the Naga Peoples Front (NPF) to form a single regional political party in Nagaland. The decision was taken during the NDPP’s 6th General Convention, held at the Capital Cultural Hall in Kohima on Saturday.
The convention, attended by party representatives from all levels across the state, adopted several resolutions expressing optimism that the merger would strengthen regional ideals and consolidate political efforts under a unified banner. In accordance with Article X of the NDPP Constitution, four key resolutions were passed, including the acceptance of NPF’s offer to amalgamate, and endorsement of the party leadership to ensure a smooth transition.
“The unconditional offer of the NPF is a mature and well-calibrated move in working towards a strong and unified regional political party in the state. NDPP members look forward to working together under the banner of the NPF,” stated the party in a release. The resolutions further highlighted that the merger would reinforce the pursuit of resolving the long-standing Indo-Naga political issue and continue to represent the voice and aspirations of the Naga people.
Following the NDPP convention, the Legislature Party convened at the Chief Minister’s Residential Office in Kohima, where incumbent Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio was unanimously elected as the NPF Legislature Party leader.
Taking to social media, Rio said: “I’m humbled to be elected leader of the NPF Legislature Party. Along with NPFLP, we met Hon’ble Speaker Shri Sharingain Longkumer & submitted our documents. Grateful to my colleagues & party organisations for reposing faith in my leadership & to the Almighty for His guidance & blessings.”
