Aizawl, October 21: Truck operators and commercial vehicle owners in Mizoram’s Kolasib district have announced a four-day strike from October 23 to 26, protesting the poor condition of National Highway-306 (NH-306), the state’s key transport lifeline.
Organised by the Kolasib unit of the Mizoram Tipper Association (MTA) and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of drivers and vehicle owners, the protest will block the Sairang–Vairengte and Kolasib–Bairabi stretches of NH-306 from 7 am on October 23 to 4 pm on October 26. The Kawnpui–Durtlang alternate route connecting Aizawl and Kolasib will also be closed. Emergency service vehicles will be exempted.
MTA Kolasib General Secretary Vanlallungtiawia said the road has become “dangerous for trucks and other vehicles” despite recent repairs carried out in July and August. He blamed slow and substandard repair work by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for accidents and warned that ongoing work may not be completed before the next rainy season.
Around 30 local commercial vehicle associations have pledged support for the strike, highlighting the widespread concern over the highway’s condition.
State officials confirmed that repair work on NH-306, also known as NH-6, which connects Aizawl to Silchar in Assam and serves as a crucial supply route for essential goods, is ongoing. Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Director Saizikpuii noted that repair activities have already disrupted the supply of LPG and fuel, causing trucks carrying essentials to be stranded for days, though no major shortages have been reported.
