NEW DELHI, Oct 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for the northeastern states, forecasting light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at many places, with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura between October 30 and November 1
According to the IMD, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph are expected over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on October 29 and 30. Heavy rainfall may occur at isolated locations in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from October 30 to November 1, while Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya could experience persistent heavy showers during this period.
The weather activity has been attributed to a deep depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, moving west-northwest at around 8 kmph. The system is expected to intensify into Cyclone Montha and further strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28, making landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada with wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph.
