NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met the Indian women’s cricket team at his official residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, to celebrate their historic ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 victory. The team scripted history by defeating South Africa in the final at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, clinching their maiden ICC title.
Addressing the players, the Prime Minister said the triumph was a proud moment for every Indian, adding that the day was made even more special as it coincided with Dev Deepawali and Gurpurab. “Cricket in India is not just a sport—it’s an emotion that unites the nation. When our team wins, the whole country rejoices,” he said, lauding the team’s perseverance and resilience after their earlier setbacks.
Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, recalling how he had encouraged them after their loss in the 2017 World Cup final. “This time, meeting him with the trophy feels like a dream fulfilled,” she said, adding that the team hopes to continue making the country proud.
Head coach Amol Muzumdar praised the players’ commitment and described their campaign as one led by “the daughters of the nation,” reflecting the hard work and intensity that went into every practice session.
Star batter Smriti Mandhana shared how the Prime Minister’s advice in 2017 on handling expectations stayed with her throughout the years. “His words helped us deal with pressure and stay focused. It feels like destiny that India hosted and won its first Women’s World Cup,” she said.
Jemimah Rodrigues, reflecting on the team’s journey, said their unity and mutual support were the key to success. “A champion team is defined not just by victories, but by how it rises after a fall,” she remarked.
The Prime Minister congratulated the entire squad for their spirit and teamwork, emphasizing that their achievement had inspired millions of young girls across the nation. “The whole country feels proud. You have not only won a trophy but also won the hearts of 140 crore Indians,” Modi said.
