Senior Nagaland MLA Imkong L Imchen Passes Away

KOHIMA, Nov 11: Senior Nagaland legislator and Advisor for Information & Public Relations, and Soil & Water Conservation, Imkong L Imchen, passed away on Tuesday afternoon at a private hospital in Guwahati after a brief illness. He was 75 and is survived by his wife, four sons, and two daughters.

Imchen was admitted to a hospital in Kohima on November 8 following health complications and was later airlifted to Guwahati for advanced treatment.

A State Funeral has been scheduled at his official residence at MH/3, Old Minister’s Hill, Kohima, on November 12. His mortal remains will later be taken to his native Mangmetong village in Mokokchung district for the final rites.

A veteran politician and respected public figure, Imchen had a long and distinguished career spanning over two decades in public service. He first entered the Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 2003 as an Independent candidate representing the 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency and went on to win the seat five consecutive times, showcasing his enduring influence and popularity.

Over the years, he represented various political parties, including the Naga People’s Front (NPF), with which he won in 2008, 2013, and 2018, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under which he secured his most recent victory in 2023.

Before entering politics, Imchen was deeply involved in student and community affairs, having served as the President of Ao Senden, Ao Students’ Conference, and General Secretary of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF). His early leadership roles laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to serving the people of Nagaland.
