AIZAWL, Nov 12: Authorities in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district have initiated a full-scale investigation into a suspected waterborne disease outbreak that has claimed five lives—four in Myanmar’s Salachhuah village and one in Kakichhuah village on the Indian side of the border.

A review meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Donny Lalruatsanga was held on Wednesday to assess the situation and coordinate emergency response measures. Senior Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lalmuanawma Jongte and other district health officials were also present.

Expressing grave concern over the fatalities, DC Lalruatsanga emphasized the need for “swift and coordinated action” to contain the outbreak. “All preventive and control measures must be strictly implemented,” he said, adding that efforts are underway to trace the source of contamination and prevent further spread.

According to Dr. Jongte, the first cases were reported on November 4. A medical team visited Kakichhuah village on November 11 to collect water samples, which have been sent to Zoram Medical College and Hospital for laboratory testing. Preliminary findings suggest the infection may have originated from Salachhuah village in Myanmar.

“Of the individuals examined, 27 were found to be infected, ranging from 5 to 63 years of age. A Rapid Response Team has been deployed, and a local health worker is monitoring the situation round the clock,” Dr. Jongte said.

Authorities have urged residents to drink only boiled or treated water, maintain hygiene, and follow health advisories strictly. Kakichhuah village has been declared a containment area for one week, with movement in and out restricted except for medical, election, and emergency services.
