GUWAHATI, Nov 20: Five residents of Dhobokata village in Assam’s Sonitpur district have been ordered to leave the state within 24 hours after a Foreigners Tribunal declared them non-citizens, prompting authorities to invoke the colonial-era Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950.
The expulsion orders—issued on November 18 by the District Magistrate’s office in Tezpur—name Hanufa, Amjad Ali, Mariyam Nessa, Fatema, and Monowara, all from Dhobokata under Jamugurihat police station. The directive follows the Tribunal’s opinion dated October 24, 2025, which confirmed the five individuals as foreigners in separate cases stemming from references made by the Superintendent of Police (Border) as far back as March 20, 2006.
Authorities stated that the continued presence of the individuals, now declared foreigners, is “detrimental to the interest of the general public and the internal security of the state.” They have been instructed to exit Assam through designated routes in Dhubri, Sribhumi, or South Salmara–Mankachar.
District Commissioner Ananda Kumar Das, who signed the orders, warned that failure to comply would lead to the government taking “appropriate action” to remove them from Assam under the provisions of the 1950 Act. The administration has appealed for calm and cooperation from local residents as the orders are executed.
