GUWAHATI, Nov 21 — Residents of Assam and the Northeast will no longer need to travel to Delhi or Mumbai for biometric submissions, with VFS Global agreeing to set up a major visa facilitation centre in Guwahati.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the development on Thursday, calling it a “huge relief” for people in the region who currently undertake expensive and time-consuming journeys for visa processing. The upcoming centre will offer services for more than 60 countries, significantly expanding international access for travellers from the Northeast.
Sarma said VFS Global has agreed in principle to the proposal, and details regarding the specific countries covered and the opening timeline will be shared soon. The move is expected to reduce travel burdens for thousands of applicants across the region, who have long faced logistical challenges due to the concentration of visa services in major metros.
