IMPHAL, Dec 16: Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president Keisham Meghachandra Singh on Monday sharply criticised the BJP legislators’ meeting in New Delhi, describing it as a “crash course on how to justify administrative failures back home.”
His remarks came a day after more than 30 BJP MLAs from Manipur, including two from the Kuki-Zo community, met the party’s central leadership to discuss the situation in the state, which has been under President’s Rule since February 2025.
Sharing photographs of the meeting on social media platform X, Keisham said that instead of restoring law and order in the violence-hit state, the BJP had “reduced its MLAs to students attending crash courses in Delhi.” He accused the ruling party at the Centre of failing to address the ground realities in Manipur, where ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023 has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.
The BJP Manipur Legislature Party meeting was held at the party headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santosh and Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra. In a brief statement, the BJP said the discussion focused on “peace and progress of Manipur.”
Party sources, however, indicated that deliberations also included the possibility of forming a popular government in the state at the earliest and seeking enhanced financial assistance from the Centre to accelerate development projects.
President’s Rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 after then Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The 60-member State Assembly, whose tenure runs till 2027, has since been kept under suspended animation.
The Congress has repeatedly accused the BJP of mishandling the Manipur crisis, while the BJP maintains that efforts are underway to restore normalcy and revive an elected government in the state.
