Cyclist Malem Thongam crosses Kangpokpi district to reach Sekmai

IMPHAL, Dec 18: Despite strong threats from a Kuki organisation that cyclist Malem Thongam should not cross Kangpokpi district, the social activist on Thursday safely crossed the Kuki dominated district in a security convoy to reach Imphal West district.

“My previous schedule was to cross Kangpokpi on Friday. However, we left Senapati district headquarters on Thursday early morning and now I have reached Sekmai in Imphal West district. I will be reaching the state capital Imphal on Friday” Thongam said.

Sekmai is a town nearly 22 km from the state capital.

The social activist also said he didnt cycle through the district due to security issues and came in a special security convoy of central forces.

Kangpokpi district based Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) on Wednesday had asked concerned authority that the proposed cyling for crossing Kangpokpi district by Malem Thongam should be stopped immediately.

It also said if any untoward incidents while crossing Kangpokpi district, “COTU and Kuki Zo people of the district will not be responsible but rather the concern authority will bear the full responsibility.”

Thongam had started a cycling expedition from October 2 from Delhi’s Qutub Minar to Imphal under the theme “cycling for Manipur peace” to spead the message of restoring peace and normalcy in the state.

The transgender activist had crossed Nagaland and reached Manipur’s Naga dominated Senapati district adjoining Kangpokpi district on Wednesday.
