IMPHAL, Dec 20: Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on Friday appreciated the 19th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles for carrying out confidence-building measures in Torbung village following a recent attack by suspected Kuki militants in Bishnupur district.
Speaking to the media after returning to Imphal from New Delhi, where he attended a high-level BJP meeting on December 14, Singh responded to questions regarding the incidents in Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai areas. He said miscreants exist in every community and stressed that the Government of India would take all necessary precautionary steps to prevent any incident that could trigger fresh violence in the state.
“The Centre will act firmly to ensure such incidents do not recur,” Singh said.
The former Chief Minister particularly lauded the outreach efforts of the 19th Battalion, Garhwal Rifles, stating that their interaction with local residents after the attack helped reassure the community and restore a sense of security and normalcy.
On the BJP meeting in Delhi, Singh described the visit as “significant and purposeful,” noting that it was exclusively attended by BJP MLAs from Manipur. Of the 37 BJP legislators in the state, 34 were present, while the remaining three were absent due to unavoidable reasons.
He said the discussions focused on restoring peace at the earliest and ensuring prosperity for Manipur. “The deliberations centred on how communities can once again live together peacefully with a sense of oneness and mutual affection,” Singh added.
Expressing optimism, Biren Singh said sustained dialogue, strengthened security measures and cooperation among communities would help Manipur move towards lasting peace and stability.
