Over 600 Acres of Illicit Poppy Cultivation Destroyed in Manipur

IMPHAL, Dec 22: Security forces destroyed over 600 acres of illicit poppy cultivation in the hill districts of Ukhrul and Kangpokpi in Manipur, a police statement informed on Sunday.

Security forces destroyed approximately 559 acres of poppy plantations from December 16 to December 20 in different locations of Ukhrul district, including the hill ranges of Yaolen, Lamlai Chingphei, Shongphel and Mullam, and the hill ranges of Torah, Champhung, Teinem, Phalee, Changta, it said.

82 huts found at the plantation sites were also destroyed during the operation. Three FIRs have been registered in connection with the drive against poppy plantation

In a separate operation in Kangpokpi district, security forces destroyed a total of 42 acres of poppy plantation at the hill ranges of L. Simol, Jangnomphai and SP Ngaimun areas on Saturday.

20 huts, 15 packets of salt, 5 Kgs of fertilizer, 5 litres of herbicide and 5 Kgs of Poppy seed found at the cultivation site were also destroyed, it said. 

Meanwhile, security forces arrested an alleged drug peddler and recovered 212 gram of brown sugar from a vehicle during a routine check at Naka Check Post at Tengnoupal polive station in Tengnoupal district on Saturday. He has been identified as one MD Habib (28).
