NEW DELHI, Jan 3: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday met senior officials from the Manipur government to review the security situation and the status of rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the ethnic violence-hit northeastern state, officials aware of the matter said.

The meeting, held in the national capital, was attended by Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla, Security Adviser Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh and Chief Secretary Puneet Goel. The review comes ahead of February 13, 2026, marking one year since the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 3, 2023. During the meeting, senior officials briefed the Union Home Minister on the prevailing security situation in both the valley and hill areas of the state.

The discussions also focused on the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons, an official said. The Manipur government recently initiated the rehabilitation process by relocating a group of Meitei IDPs to their homes near the buffer zone adjoining hill areas inhabited by Kuki-Zo communities. However, within 24 hours of the first batch being shifted, militants from the hills allegedly opened fire towards the villages in protest against the move.

According to officials, around 50,000 people continue to live in relief camps across Manipur. The government has drawn up a plan for phased rehabilitation of displaced families alongside efforts to restore normalcy.

“The top officials met in Delhi for a detailed security review of Manipur. They briefed the minister on the current situation in both the valley and hill areas and discussed the way forward for rehabilitating the internally displaced people. Security is of utmost importance, which is why the review was conducted,” an official familiar with the meeting said.
