NEW DELHI, Jan 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged India’s artificial intelligence startups to ensure that their AI models are ethical, unbiased, transparent and rooted in strong data privacy principles, as the country seeks to emerge as a global leader in responsible AI development.
Chairing a roundtable with leading Indian AI startups at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, the Prime Minister said India has the potential to promote affordable, inclusive and frugal AI solutions for the world. He stressed that Indian AI models should be distinct in character, encourage local and indigenous content, and support regional languages to reflect the country’s diversity.
Describing startups and AI entrepreneurs as co-architects of India’s future, PM Modi said the nation possesses immense capacity not only for innovation but also for large-scale implementation. He called on the AI ecosystem to present a unique global model that embodies the vision of “Made in India, Made for the World.”
Highlighting the transformative role of artificial intelligence across sectors, the Prime Minister noted that India will host the India AI Impact Summit 2026 next month, which he said would underscore the country’s growing influence in the global technology landscape.
Twelve Indian AI startups, selected for the AI for ALL: Global Impact Challenge to be held as part of the upcoming summit, participated in the roundtable and showcased their work. These startups are engaged in diverse areas such as Indian language foundation models, multilingual large language models, generative AI for content creation, healthcare diagnostics, engineering simulations, and advanced data analytics.
The startup leaders lauded India’s strong commitment to building a robust AI ecosystem, pointing to the rapid growth and vast future potential of the sector. They said India is increasingly emerging as a global hub for AI innovation and deployment, supported by a conducive policy and innovation environment.
The meeting was attended by CEOs and representatives from companies including Avataar, BharatGen, Fractal, Gan, Genloop, Gnani, Intellihealth, Sarvam, Shodh AI, Soket AI, Tech Mahindra and Zenteiq. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State Jitin Prasada were also present.
