Petrol Pumps Reopen Across Manipur After Security Assurances

IMPHAL, Jan 13: Petrol pumps across Manipur resumed operations on Tuesday after remaining shut for three days, following talks between the Manipur Petroleum Dealers Fraternity (MPDF) and the State Home Department. The reopening has eased a fuel crisis that had severely disrupted daily life and raised concerns over black marketing across the Valley districts.

MPDF convenor Laishram Jogen said the decision to reopen fuel stations was taken after the government assured enhanced security arrangements for petrol pumps, which he described as highly sensitive and vulnerable installations.

“We have appealed to the public that such incidents should not be repeated, as petrol pumps are explosive and vulnerable areas. We have urged the government to ensure proper security cover at all fuel stations,” Jogen said, adding that compensation should be provided if similar incidents occur in the future.

The dealers’ body has also sought compensation for damages caused during the bomb blast at the Moirang petrol pump in Bishnupur district, which prompted the indefinite shutdown of fuel outlets across Manipur. The closure brought fuel distribution to a standstill, causing acute hardship to residents and triggering reports of illegal fuel sales in several areas.

Earlier in the day, police arrested a 35-year-old active cadre of the banned Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) from the Komnao Makha Leikai area of Kakching district in connection with the blast. Police said another suspect involved in the incident has been identified and efforts are underway to apprehend him.

Although no injuries were reported in the explosion, the incident caused widespread panic and led fuel dealers to suspend operations as a precautionary measure. With petrol pumps now reopened, authorities and dealers expressed hope that strengthened security arrangements would prevent further incidents and ensure uninterrupted fuel supply across the State.
