ECI Directs 22 States, UTs to Complete Preparations for Special Intensive Revision from April 2026

NEW DELHI, Feb 21: The Election Commission of India has directed Chief Electoral Officers of 22 States and Union Territories, including Nagaland, to complete preparatory work for the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls scheduled to commence from April 2026.

In a communication issued on Thursday, the Commission instructed officials to ensure that all pre-revision activities are completed in a time-bound manner. The States and Union Territories where the next round of SIR will be undertaken include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana and Uttarakhand.

According to the advisory issued by Election Commission Secretary Pawan Diwan, “Since the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the above States/UTs is expected to commence from April 2026, you are requested to complete preparatory work related to the SIR exercise at the earliest.”

Diwan further noted that the Commission, through Order No. 23/ERS/2025 dated June 24, 2025, had mandated the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls to be undertaken across all States and Union Territories.

The Commission had earlier directed all Chief Electoral Officers, except Bihar, to initiate pre-revision activities through a letter dated July 5, 2025. The SIR exercise is currently underway in 12 States and Union Territories and is nearing completion, paving the way for the next phase beginning in April 2026.
