NEW DELHI, July 10: The Congress party launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi following his return from a five-nation tour, urging him to address pressing domestic issues including the prolonged crisis in Manipur, the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, and the tragic infrastructure collapse in Gujarat.
Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh took a dig at Modi’s extensive foreign travel, remarking, “India welcomes back its Super Premium Frequent Flier PM who is expected to be in the country for perhaps three weeks before jetting around again.” The Prime Minister arrived in India on Thursday morning after visiting Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil—where he attended the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro—and Namibia.
Ramesh questioned why Modi has still not visited Manipur, where people have been waiting for over two years amid continued unrest and ethnic tensions. He also demanded accountability in the aftermath of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, and asked why those responsible have not yet been brought to justice.
Citing the tragic bridge collapse in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Wednesday that claimed the lives of at least 13 people—including two siblings—Ramesh called on the PM to reflect on collapsing infrastructure in his home state and to prioritize disaster relief, including for flood-hit Himachal Pradesh.
He further criticized the government’s handling of the economy, calling for reforms to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) to boost consumption and measures to stimulate private investment beyond a select few big business houses.
Ramesh also suggested that the Prime Minister should chair an all-party meeting ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, set to begin on July 21, to finalize a consensus agenda—something he noted Modi rarely does.
