New Delhi, August 5: Amit Shah on Tuesday became the longest-serving Union Home Minister in India’s history, marking a major milestone in his political career and the Bharatiya Janata Party’s governance. With 2,258 days in office, Shah has now surpassed the record of 2,256 days set by veteran BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Shah during the NDA Parliamentary Party meeting, praising his leadership and highlighting the transformative developments in India’s internal security landscape under his tenure. Modi noted that the government, under Shah’s stewardship at the Ministry of Home Affairs, has implemented the Constitution in its truest sense and worked to fulfill Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s vision for the nation.
The occasion was notably symbolic as it coincided with the sixth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, a landmark decision taken during Shah’s tenure that revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status and fully integrated the region with the Indian Union.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya confirmed the milestone on social media, stating that Shah had officially become the longest-serving Home Minister, overtaking both Advani and India’s first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who served 1,218 days.
Shah’s tenure has been marked by bold decisions, including a sustained crackdown on terrorism, extensive internal security reforms, and a national effort to eliminate Maoist insurgency by March 2026. His leadership has been central to the government’s national security strategy and legislative reforms.
