GUWAHATI, Feb 19: Amit Shah will begin a three-day visit to Assam on Thursday night, arriving in Silchar ahead of the Assembly elections expected in March–April.
Officials said the Union Home Minister will stay overnight in Silchar before travelling on Friday to the Border Security Force’s Natunpur border outpost along the India–Bangladesh frontier to review security preparedness. During the visit, he is scheduled to launch the Vibrant Villages Programme aimed at strengthening infrastructure and livelihood opportunities in border areas.
Later in the day, Shah will address a BJP rally in the Barak Valley, formally launching the party’s election campaign in the region. He will then travel briefly to Agartala in neighbouring Tripura before returning to Assam the same evening.
On Saturday, Shah is slated to attend the annual day parade of the Central Reserve Police Force at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, marking the first time the event will be held in the Northeast.
He will also lay the foundation stone for the new campus of the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Kasutoli in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati.
The visit will be Shah’s third to Assam since December 29, as the Bharatiya Janata Party steps up preparations to seek a third consecutive term in the 126-member state Assembly.
