Guwahati, August 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday inaugurated the Brahmaputra Wing at the Raj Bhavan and laid foundation stones for eight projects worth ₹322 crore, including the Northeast’s second National Cyber Forensic Laboratory (NCFL), at a ceremony in Assam.
Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal were present at the event. Addressing the gathering, Shah highlighted the progress of the Northeast region under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership over the past 11 years, calling it a period that will be “inscribed in golden letters” in the region’s history.
The newly inaugurated NCFL, located at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Guwahati, will serve all eight northeastern states and is expected to strengthen policing efforts against cybercrime, narcotics trafficking, illegal smuggling, and border-related challenges. “Through the NCFL, policemen from all eight states of the Northeast will work round the clock to protect the country’s borders and safeguard citizens’ earnings,” Shah said.
Shah also highlighted the Brahmaputra Wing of the Raj Bhavan, constructed at a cost of over ₹40 crore, which will provide modern facilities for constitutional and public functions. He emphasized the government’s legal reforms, including the replacement of colonial-era criminal laws with three new legislations, aimed at enhancing forensic-based investigations.
On the political front, Shah criticized the main opposition party for engaging in “negative politics” and condemned reported derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Modi’s late mother, demanding an apology. He further lauded India’s rising global standing under Modi, noting that 27 countries have conferred their highest civilian honours on the Prime Minister.
