Amit Shah Inaugurates Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Assam

GUWAHATI, March 15: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today inaugurated the revamped, state-of-the-art Lachit Barphukan Police Academy and laid the foundation stone for police academy housing projects at Dergaon in Golaghat district. This marks a significant milestone in the development of Assam’s police infrastructure.

During the inauguration, Shah highlighted the rapid development of Assam under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Assam is developing at a fast pace, and peace has returned to the state due to the efforts of Prime Minister Modi,” said Shah. He further mentioned that nearly all militant groups in the state have approached for peace talks, with many having surrendered. “There is no violence in the state, and as a result, the business sector is blooming, providing job opportunities for the youth,” he added.

Shah also informed that the Centre would provide Rs. 3 lakh crore for various projects in Assam, which is expected to significantly boost the state’s infrastructure sector.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, speaking at the event, called the day a “red-letter day” for Assam Police and a fitting tribute to the legendary Ahom General Lachit Barphukan. He also shared that the state government plans to establish a police medical college on the same campus. “The law and order situation in the state is better than in the last decades, and the crime rate has decreased by more than 50 percent,” Sarma stated.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, emphasized that the state-of-the-art Lachit Barphukan Police Academy would help produce the best police forces in the country, equipped to tackle new-age crimes.

The event also saw the presence of Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, and several other dignitaries.

After the ceremony at Dergaon, Shah departed for Mizoram to attend an Assam Rifles programme in Aizawl in the afternoon. He is expected to return to Guwahati in the evening. Tomorrow, Shah will address the 57th Annual Conference of the All Bodo Students Union at Dotma in Kokrajhar district and will later review the implementation of new criminal laws in the North Eastern states in Guwahati, with the Chief Ministers of the eight North Eastern states. He will return to New Delhi in the evening.
