NEW DELHI, June 19: Union Home Minister Amit Shah reignited the debate over linguistic identity in India by stating that “those who speak English in India will soon feel ashamed.” Speaking at a book launch event, Shah emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting Indian languages, asserting that without them, “we cease to be truly Indian.”

“In this country, those who speak English will soon feel ashamed—the creation of such a society is not far away,” Shah said, as quoted by ANI. He described Indian languages as “jewels of our culture” and essential for understanding India’s ethos, history, and spiritual roots.

Shah went on to assert that foreign languages, particularly English, cannot truly capture the essence of India. “The idea of a complete India cannot be imagined through half-baked foreign languages,” he remarked, adding that reclaiming the country’s linguistic heritage was crucial for national self-respect and unity.

Acknowledging the challenges in promoting native languages in a globalized world, Shah expressed confidence that Indian society would “win this battle.” He envisioned a future where India not only uses its own languages for governance and daily life but also inspires the world by doing so.

Shah also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for the country, highlighting the “Panch Pran” or five pledges for the Amrit Kaal – India’s journey towards its 100th year of independence in 2047. These include: making India a developed nation, eradicating remnants of colonial mentality, fostering pride in heritage, strengthening unity, and instilling a sense of duty among citizens.

“These pledges have become the resolve of 130 crore Indians,” Shah said. “By 2047, we will reach the pinnacle, and our languages will play a major role in that journey.”
