NEW DELHI, March 10: The second half of Parliament’s budget session, beginning today, is expected to witness intense debates as the Opposition prepares to raise issues such as the alleged manipulation of electoral rolls, the language row, the Waqf bill, and India’s handling of the Trump administration.
According to reports, Home Minister Amit Shah may move a statutory resolution seeking Parliament’s approval for the proclamation of President’s Rule in Manipur. The state has been under President’s Rule since February 13 following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Additionally, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget for Manipur in Parliament today.
The BJP-led NDA government is expected to focus on securing Parliament’s approval for the demands for grants, completing the budgetary process, passing the Waqf Amendment Bill, and seeking approval for the Manipur budget. Meanwhile, the Congress is likely to hold a strategy meeting for the session, which will continue until April 4. The INDIA bloc parties are also expected to coordinate with the Congress on key issues.
One of the contentious issues likely to be raised in Parliament is the alleged duplication of EPIC numbers, which has led to Opposition allegations of fake voters. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) flagged this issue, prompting the Election Commission to promise corrective measures within three months. However, the poll panel dismissed the TMC’s claims that voter lists were manipulated to allow voters from other states to cast ballots in West Bengal.
The Opposition is also expected to challenge the government over US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and the deportation of illegal Indian immigrants in chains. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has raised concerns over India’s decision to reduce tariffs on US products, questioning whether it could harm the interests of Indian farmers and manufacturers.
Referring to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Washington, Ramesh asked whether the Modi government was “compromising” Indian interests in trade negotiations.
“The Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is in Washington DC to talk trade with the Americans. Meanwhile, President Trump says this. What has the Modi Government agreed to? Are the interests of Indian farmers and of Indian manufacturing being compromised? The PM must take Parliament into confidence when it resumes on March 10,” Ramesh wrote on social media platform X.
