Imphal, August 23: The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) have withdrawn their ongoing agitation over the Gwaltabi incident of May 20, 2025, following assurances and actions initiated by the state authorities.

The decision came after a joint meeting of the two press bodies at the Manipur Press Club on Saturday. The organisations said Governor of Manipur had assured a fair inquiry, leading to the formation of a two-member Inquiry Committee. The panel submitted its report on June 13, and the state government has now officially communicated to AMWJU and EGM that the recommendations have been accepted. Relevant departments and security agencies have also been directed to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.

While announcing the withdrawal, AMWJU and EGM expressed cautious optimism. They stressed that the journalist community would remain vigilant and reiterated that the safety and dignity of media persons were non-negotiable. Any failure to implement the committee’s recommendations, they warned, would trigger renewed democratic action.

The two organisations also extended their gratitude to fellow journalists, civil society groups, and the people of Manipur for their solidarity in defending press freedom and accountability.
