IMPHAL, Jan 2: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has called for the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh, asserting that his government has failed to address the ongoing crisis in the state.
In a strongly worded statement, the CPI described the Chief Minister’s recent apology as a delayed acknowledgment of the gravity of the situation and an admission of his administration’s failure to ensure law and order.
“The apology expressed by Chief Minister Biren Singh after such a long time is an admission of the gravity of the crisis and the complete failure of his government to address the issues and challenges of the people in Manipur,” the CPI said. The party further criticized the Chief Minister for presiding over what it described as a “complete collapse of law and order.”
According to the CPI, the crisis in Manipur has revealed an absolute breakdown of governance, with the state government unable to maintain law and order, protect its citizens, or ensure justice. The party also highlighted the administration’s failure to take meaningful steps toward reconciliation, including fostering dialogue between communities or addressing the deep social divisions caused by the ongoing unrest.
“There have been no concrete measures to foster dialogue between communities or heal the deep social wounds inflicted by the ongoing crisis. The government has shown no willingness to take political parties into confidence or involve them in finding a comprehensive political solution,” the statement read.
The CPI also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his inaction, pointing out his continued refusal to visit Manipur or directly address the crisis. “This failure of the Union Government has further eroded trust and exacerbated the situation,” the party asserted, adding that the Prime Minister’s lack of engagement demonstrated a disregard for the people of Manipur.
Calling for accountability, the CPI emphasized that the people of Manipur deserve empathetic governance, which it said the current administration has failed to provide. The party demanded Chief Minister Biren Singh’s resignation as a necessary step to restore public confidence and create an opportunity for a fresh, people-centric approach to resolving the crisis.
“The CPI firmly believes that the people of Manipur deserve accountable and empathetic governance, which Chief Minister Biren Singh and his government have utterly failed to provide. His resignation is imperative for restoring confidence in the administration and paving the way for a fresh, people-centric approach to resolving the crisis,” the statement concluded.
