IMPHAL, Dec 11: Meitei organisation Arambai Tenggol (AT) has urged President Droupadi Murmu to address the plight of internally displaced persons as well as for the implementation of NRC.
In a statement, the organisation expressed hope that the visit would mark a turning point for thousands of displaced families struggling for basic rights, security, and dignified resettlement.
AT noted that “many IDPs continue to live in harsh conditions despite the availability of central schemes” and urged the government to ensure fair, transparent, and unbiased delivery of all entitled benefits. The group also stressed that displaced families “look to the nation with trust,” and that their faith must be honored.
AT also raised sharp concerns over unregulated cross-border movement, and called for the need of stronger verification mechanisms, including implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur.
Citing the Supreme Court’s recent observation that illegal immigrants do not enjoy the same legal rights as citizens, the organisation said accurate identification is essential not only for demographic stability but also for national security, specifically from “unlawful immigration from Myanmar and Bangladesh.”
“A robust identification framework is crucial to protect the interests of indigenous communities and restore long-term stability in Manipur” it said.
AT also affirmed its commitment to support constructive steps by the central and state governments to restore peace and normalcy and expressed confidence that president Murmu’s visit would “inspire decisive, compassionate actions to rebuild harmony across all communities that have coexisted in Manipur for generations.”
