Shillong, August 9: A gang of armed miscreants, allegedly from Bangladesh, launched a violent attack in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district in the early hours of Friday, assaulting and stabbing a man near the international border.
According to police sources, around 1 a.m., a group of about nine suspected Bangladeshi nationals, reportedly armed with weapons including a gun, crossed into Indian territory through Rongdongai village under the Nongjri–Nonghyllam area. The victim, identified as Balsrang A. Marak, was allegedly attacked after he attempted to block their movement.
The assailants fled after the assault but are believed to still be within Indian territory, as villagers reported seeing some of them later in the morning without realizing they were part of the armed gang.
Police suspect the group may be part of a cross-border criminal network with links to Bangladeshi police personnel. An identity card belonging to the Bangladesh police was recovered from the scene, along with other items such as a firearm, walkie-talkies, chargers, Bangladeshi currency, and the abandoned police ID card.
