Army Chief Praises Indian Military Training Team in Bhutan for Strengthening Defence Ties

NEW DELHI, July 3: Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi has lauded the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT) in Bhutan for its “focused and effective” joint training efforts with the Royal Bhutan Army (RBA), underscoring the strength of India-Bhutan military cooperation. The visit comes during his four-day official tour aimed at further deepening bilateral defence ties.

During his interaction with personnel from both the Indian Army and RBA at IMTRAT on Thursday, General Dwivedi commended the team’s commitment to leadership development and operational synergy. The Indian Army’s Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI) highlighted IMTRAT’s status as India’s oldest overseas military mission, a symbol of long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations.

Reaffirming the Indian Army’s support for Bhutan’s transformative initiatives, General Dwivedi also visited the Gyalsung Academy in Jamtsholing on Wednesday. He was briefed on the visionary Gyalsung National Service program launched by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to empower youth and promote nation-building. Lauding the Academy’s infrastructure and mission, he remarked that it would play a pivotal role in shaping Bhutan’s future.

On Tuesday, General Dwivedi was granted a royal audience by Their Majesties, King and Queen of Bhutan, at the historic Tashichhodzong. The meeting was marked by a ceremonial Chipdrel procession and a Guard of Honour. Earlier, the COAS also laid a wreath at the National Memorial Chorten in honour of the Third Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.

The Army Chief held strategic discussions with Lieutenant General Batoo Tshering, Chief Operations Officer of the Royal Bhutan Army, focusing on enhancing defence cooperation, interoperability, and regional security. His arrival on Monday was met with a warm welcome by Major General Dorji Rinchen, Deputy COO of the RBA.
