GUWAHATI, Nov 28: The Assam Legislative Assembly is gearing up to establish a dedicated detention room within its premises to hold suspended MLAs who disrupt House proceedings. Speaker Biswajit Daimary on Friday confirmed that the Assembly Secretariat will soon frame detailed rules and procedures for its functioning.
The development comes in the wake of repeated disruptions by suspended MLA Akhil Gogoi, who once again caused uproar during Question Hour today. Following his suspension, Minister Bimal Borah backed the proposal for a disciplinary detention space inside the Assembly to curb persistent disturbances.
Responding to the suggestion, Speaker Daimary officially announced that the detention room would be set up soon—a move seen as a major shift in the House’s approach to enforcing decorum and parliamentary discipline.
The decision has generated political buzz amid the recent confrontational sessions and Gogoi’s continued sharp criticism of the government. Further details on operational guidelines and implementation are expected in the coming days.
