GUWAHATI, Nov 23: The BJP-led ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a significant victory in the Assam bypolls, winning all five Assembly constituencies on Saturday. This clean sweep reflects the party’s strong support base and commitment to governance, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Among the notable wins, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured the Bongaigaon Assembly seat, with Diptimayee Choudhury defeating Congress candidate Brajenjit Singha by a substantial margin of 35,164 votes. In the Sidli Assembly seat, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) emerged victorious as Nirmal Kumar Brahma bested Bodoland People’s Front candidate Suddho Kumar Basumatary by 37,016 votes, garnering a total of 95,243 votes against Basumatary’s 58,227.

Chief Minister Sarma expressed gratitude to the people for their overwhelming support, describing the NDA’s 5/5 win as a “resounding testament” to Assam’s commitment to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of good governance and development. He also praised the dedication of party workers in communicating the development agenda across constituencies, stating, “A big shoutout to our dedicated Karyakartas who took our message of development to every booth!”

The bypolls, held on November 13, filled vacancies left by five legislators elected to Parliament in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, including two from the BJP and one each from AGP, UPPL, and Congress. The counting of votes commenced at 8 AM under strict security measures, indicating the significance of these elections in the political landscape of Assam.

As the AGP celebrated its entry into Parliament with Phani Bhusan Choudhury’s election from the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat, Congress faced tough competition, notably losing in Dhubri where its candidate, Rakibul Hussain, defeated AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal by over 10 lakh votes.

The BJP contested in three of the five constituencies while AGP and UPPL represented the remaining districts, highlighting the collaborative strength of the ruling alliance in Assam’s political framework.
