Assam CM Announces Judicial Inquiry into Zubeen Garg’s Death

Guwahati, October 4: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the causes and circumstances surrounding the death of singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on September 19. The commission will be headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court and is scheduled to be set up on Saturday.

Addressing the public during a live social media session, the Chief Minister urged anyone with information regarding Zubeen’s death to come forward and depose before the commission. He also confirmed that the post-mortem report conducted in Singapore has been handed over to Zubeen’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, while the report from GMCH (Gauhati Medical College and Hospital) will be provided to the family shortly.

Zubeen’s sudden demise has left millions of admirers in Assam and beyond in shock. In a related development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Income Tax Department are expected to join the Assam Police in probing an alleged financial scam and acquisition of benami properties linked to event manager Shyamkanu Mahanta, who is also accused in the case related to Zubeen’s death.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police has reportedly uncovered financial irregularities dating back over 20 years, allegedly committed by Mahanta during his tenure at a non-banking financial company (NBFC).
