Guwahati, September 18: The Assam Congress on Thursday announced that it will lodge a police complaint against the BJP for allegedly circulating AI-generated videos on social media that target state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi and the Muslim community.
According to the party, the complaint will be filed at the Dispur Police Station seeking an FIR against the BJP’s IT cell. Congress alleged that the videos, generated using artificial intelligence, spread misinformation by portraying Muslims taking over iconic locations in Assam, including Guwahati airport, a stadium, and the historic Rangghar amphitheatre. Captions accompanying the videos read “Assam without BJP” and urged voters to “choose carefully,” while also labelling Gogoi a “paijan” (outsider).
Gaurav Gogoi, reacting to the controversy, accused the BJP of attempting to communalise the election campaign. “The words, actions and images produced by the BJP IT cell do not have the strength to scratch the surface of Assamese society,” he said, stressing that the Congress will formally seek legal action. He further asserted that Assamese people aspire for progress through education, entrepreneurship, and modern professions, not divisive politics.
The BJP, however, dismissed the charges and accused Gogoi of failing his own constituency of Koliabor. In a social media post, the party claimed Gogoi’s vision for a “Bor Axom” (Great Assam) excluded his hometown, calling his promises “empty.”
State Information and Public Relations Minister Pijush Hazarika also hit back, saying Congress leaders had long spoken of illegal immigration but were now “raising claims of Islamophobia.” He argued that if flagging demographic changes amounted to Islamophobia, Congress was itself equating all Muslims with illegal immigrants.
