Guwahati, August 12: Assam has added 10 new co-districts to its administrative framework, taking the total to 49, in a move aimed at decentralising governance, enhancing service delivery, and strengthening welfare schemes at the grassroots level.
The newly formed units are Boko–Chhaygaon and Palashbari in Kamrup, Borsola and Rangapara in Sonitpur, Mariani and Teok in Jorhat, Makum and Digboi in Tinsukia, Dholai in Cachar, and Dudhnoi in Goalpara. Eight of them were inaugurated on Tuesday, while the remaining two will be launched on Wednesday.
Inaugurating the Teok Co-District Commissioner’s Office at Kenduguri, Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora described the development as the fulfilment of a long-standing public demand. “The co-district will function on par with a full-fledged district, ensuring better services for the public,” he said, adding that the restructuring aligns with recent changes in constituency boundaries to simplify administrative processes.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in a statement, called the expansion “another step towards bringing government machinery to the doorstep of the people.” Officials said co-districts will handle land revenue matters, magisterial functions, panchayat affairs, food and civil supplies, welfare schemes, and disaster management, reducing the need for citizens to travel to district headquarters.
This marks the second phase of Assam’s co-district expansion, following the inauguration of 39 such units in October 2024 — the first initiative of its kind in India. The state government believes the move will not only improve administrative efficiency but also accelerate development across rural and semi-urban areas.
