SHILLONG, March 26: Assam Rifles Director General, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera on Tuesday emphasized the critical importance of securing both the India-Myanmar border and the Kashmir valley during the Assam Rifles Commander Conference 2025, held in Shillong. He addressed senior officials, urging the paramilitary force to be prepared for any future security challenges and contingencies.
Lieutenant General Lakhera highlighted the significance of maintaining the security and sanctity of the unfenced India-Myanmar border and the Kashmir valley. The Assam Rifles, trained in counter-insurgency operations, are tasked with securing the 1,643-km-long India-Myanmar border across the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km). The force is also deployed in Jammu and Kashmir to address the ongoing security challenges in the region.
The conference, held at the Assam Rifles headquarters at Laitkor, Shillong, was attended by formation commanders, battalion commanders, and staff officers from various Assam Rifles formations. Discussions at the conference focused on enhancing the combat potential and operational readiness of the force, the acquisition of next-generation weapon systems, and sharing best practices among various units to improve overall efficiency.
The event also underscored the importance of continuous training and skill development for the soldiers. Lieutenant General Lakhera commended the formation and unit commanders for their role in ensuring peace and maintaining stability in their respective areas of responsibility, urging them to remain vigilant due to the volatile environment they operate in.
In addition, the conference recognized the outstanding contribution of certain formations in promoting and implementing Hindi language across the force. The prestigious Rajbhasha Trophies 2025 were awarded to the top three distinguished formations: 27th Assam Rifles secured the first prize, followed by Headquarters Inspectorate General Assam Rifles (South) in second place, and 28th Assam Rifles Battalion in third.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment from all attendees to maintain the highest standards of operational excellence and to continue striving for excellence in every aspect of their work.
