SHILLONG, Nov 24: Assam Rifles successfully conducted the 4th Edition of the “Assam Rifles Half Marathon 2024” on Sunday, at the Headquarters of Directorate General Assam Rifles, Laitkor, Shillong. The event, aimed at promoting the “Fit India Movement,” was first introduced in 2021 and has since gained widespread popularity among running enthusiasts across the country.
This year’s marathon attracted over 1900 participants, with representation from 28 states and three union territories. Runners of all genders and age groups participated, showcasing the spirit of unity in diversity and promoting national integration. Legendary International Boxer MC Mary Kom, a former Member of the Rajya Sabha, served as the brand ambassador for the event and also participated in the 10 km run.

The marathon took place amidst the picturesque hills of East Khasi District, with the scenic backdrop of Laitkor adding to the event’s appeal. Several dignitaries from the government, armed forces, and volunteers from across the country graced the occasion. The marathon featured three categories: Cloud Chase (21 km), Pine Path (10 km), and Crystal Stream (5 km), with participation from all age groups in each category.
In total, 347 participants competed in the 21 km Half Marathon, 826 in the 10 km, and 776 in the 5 km categories. The winners were awarded medals, certificates, and t-shirts as souvenirs. Cash prizes worth Rs 18.15 lakhs were distributed among the top 48 runners across various categories, along with 150 consolation prizes.

The Chief Guest for the event, Air Marshal Surat Singh, AVSM, VM, VSM, AOC-in-C Eastern Air Command, praised the enthusiasm and spirit of the participants and spectators. He presented the prizes to the winners of the 21 km and 10 km categories.
The Assam Rifles, known as the ‘Sentinels of the North East,’ continues to contribute to peace and development in the region. In line with its commitment, the event is part of the Assam Rifles’ ongoing efforts to promote wellness, fitness, and national unity. This year’s event saw a significant increase in participation compared to the previous year, reflecting its growing popularity. Additionally, the marathon was promoted as the first Green Marathon in the North East, emphasizing zero plastic usage and the recycling of waste.
